Bathroom: our tips for designing it

Our bathroom is one of the most important rooms in the house. This is where we take care of ourselves on a daily basis. It is important to make this room a space for relaxation and pampering. With an average area of 5m², it is usually the smallest room in our homes. It is therefore essential to make it functional and optimised.

The layout of your bathroom will be determined by the dimensions of your room and the positioning of pipes, radiators and electrical sockets. Then select the furniture that will best suit the layout of these elements. Also take into account the traffic flow in the room, the people who use it and whether they are children. Note that there should be 70 cm of free space in front of a piece of bathroom furniture for easy access to storage.

There are two main categories of bathroom furniture: wall-hung and floor-standing. They can also have open or closed storage, with hinged doors and/or drawers. Each piece of furniture has features that the other does not. Hanging furniture will make it easier to clean the floor, and will maximise space. Whereas floor-standing units, with or without legs, will offer greater storage space and allow for more toiletries or bath towels to be stored. You should know that all furniture with drawers can be arranged as you wish: adding compartments, boxes or baskets. This will allow you to get organised.

Many people have small bathrooms. Organization is the key to maximizing your room, storage and circulation. Don't hesitate to take measurements and draw up plans. In terms of storage, the bathroom column is ideal for small spaces. This type of furniture will allow you to keep all the products you usually use up high, while you can store the rest in the lower shelves or in a cabinet with drawers. Avoid a multitude of floor-standing units, which will considerably reduce the usable surface area.

The wall cupboard is THE classic piece of bathroom furniture. Very practical, it offers a vast storage space thanks to its shelves and drawers. The cabinets will be your best ally if you have little space in your bathroom. You will be able to store everything in the same place: a stock of products, towels and bath mats... Everything that usually takes up space! A solid wood model in light tones will be perfect for a rustic bathroom, but also for a modern and contemporary decoration. Don't skimp on baskets, as they are very useful for accessories.

For a long time decorated with cold colours such as white or light blue, today, more intense tones are invading your bathroom! Opt for originality by mixing wall colours with wall tiles for example. The colour of your room will depend on the orientation of the bathroom and its luminosity. Many bathrooms do not have an opening to the outside. Therefore, choose light colours so that the light is reflected on the walls.

If you have a window in your bathroom, add some plants to your room for a green touch! They will bring a bohemian chic style while renewing the air and absorbing excess humidity in your bathroom. Pay particular attention to the choice of plant species, as not all plants like humidity and strong temperature variations.

A bathroom without a mirror is not a bathroom! Beyond looking at yourself while brushing your teeth, the mirror contributes to enlarging the space while reflecting the light. To dress up your walls, there are two options: opt for one large mirror or multiply the small models for more uniqueness.

If you don't have enough space for a bathroom cabinet or column, wall shelves are ideal for storing a few odds and ends. These types of furniture are very functional. You don't need a lot of space to hang original ones!
